Local Climate and Geography

Climate:

Winter (October–April) provides the most precipitation of any season in Shingletown—the weather tends to be either rainy or foggy and snow occurs at times. Summers are hot and dry, but rain is possible, usually a thunderstorm. The average daily maximum temperature in July stays near 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Shingletown temperatures usually are approximately 10 degree lower than the Redding area.[5] While snow on the subdivision  is uncommon, it does occur just a few miles up the hill in Shingletown. Shingletown gets sleet and freezing rain but rarely; snow is more common. Frost occurs commonly in December through February, less often in March or April. Shingletown can have chilly to cold winters like the rest of the Central Valley, of which Shingletown is located to the northernmost part. In spring rain is common. Tornadoes are extremely rare; flooding never occurs.

 Geography:

Shingletown is located at  40°29′46″N 121°51′49″W / 40.49611°N 121.86361°W (40.496033, -121.863657)[1] in upstate California, near Lassen Volcanic National Park.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 24.7 square miles (64.1 kmē), of which 24.7 square miles (63.9 kmē) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 kmē) (0.28%) is water.

The forests around Shingletown are home to the Shasta clarkia a rare subspecies of Clarkia borealis, a flowering plant in the evening primrose family. The terrain of the subdivision gently slopes from Black Butte Rd. to the valley floor below making for beautiful views of the valley and adjacent mountain ranges. The soil is extremely fertile due to the volcanic ash from Mount Lassen. The Subdivision is filled with oversized Manzanita and brush due to the fertile soil.
